It is with profound sorrow that the community mourns the tragic loss of Connor L. Sandrock, 21, and his father, Benjamin G. Sandrock, 50, both of rural Lyndon, Illinois, who lost their lives in a devastating train–vehicle collision near Savanna in Carroll County. Their passing has left family, friends, and the wider Whiteside County region in deep grief and disbelief.
According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. at a private railroad crossing just off Illinois Route 84 near the Savanna Tri-Township Airport. The pair were traveling in a pickup truck towing a boat and trailer when their vehicle was struck by a southbound train. Despite a rapid emergency response involving multiple agencies, both Connor and Benjamin were pronounced deceased as a result of the collision.
Connor was remembered as a young man full of promise, with strong ties to agriculture, education, and his community. Benjamin was known as a dedicated family man whose work ethic, leadership, and generosity left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Together, they shared not only a close father–son bond but also a deep connection to the land, local traditions, and the people around them.
Family and friends have expressed heartfelt tributes, reflecting on their kindness, commitment to community service, and the values they upheld throughout their lives. Their loss is felt deeply across the Sauk Valley region, where tight-knit communities continue to rally in support of the grieving family.
Residents along Illinois Route 84 recognize the corridor as both scenic and active, intersecting farmland, river access points, and rail lines. Private crossings in such areas often vary in visibility and warning systems, underscoring the inherent risks present in rural rail environments.
Funeral arrangements are scheduled in Prophetstown, with burial to follow in Tampico. The Sandrock family is in the thoughts and prayers of all who are mourning this unimaginable loss.
