It is with profound sadness that Prisma Health EMS announces the sudden passing of one of its active team members, EMT Michael Burton.
Michael dedicated his life to public service. Prior to joining Prisma Health EMS, he served for 28 years as a deputy sheriff in Florida, where he built a distinguished career grounded in integrity, commitment, and compassion for his community. After retiring from law enforcement, he relocated to South Carolina and continued his calling to serve others by joining the Columbia EMS team.
For the past four years, Michael was a valued and deeply respected member of the Prisma Health EMS family. Colleagues remember him not only for his professionalism and experience, but also for the kindness, humor, and genuine care he brought to every call. His presence had a meaningful impact on both patients and coworkers, and he consistently demonstrated compassion in even the most challenging circumstances.
His sudden passing has left a significant void within the EMS community. Prisma Health EMS extends heartfelt gratitude to its partners at Guardian Ambulance and First Priority for their support in maintaining Midlands operations during this difficult time.
Plans for memorial and funeral services will be shared at a later date once arrangements are finalized. The organization asks that Michael’s family, friends, and colleagues be kept in thoughts during this period of grief.
