Kenneth Lawrence Helregel, age 74, of rural Sainte Marie, Illinois, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Ken, affectionately known as Kenny to many, was born on August 4, 1951, in Tuscola, Illinois, the son of Lawrence and Eugenia “Jeanie” (Kirts) Helregel. He graduated from Newton Community High School with the Class of 1969, where he formed lifelong friendships, and later earned his degree from the University of Illinois in 1973, proudly remaining connected to his “Clods” classmates throughout his life.
On July 10, 1976, Ken married Mary Ochs, beginning nearly 50 years of devoted marriage built on love, faith, and partnership. Together they built a strong family and a life grounded in hard work and commitment. Ken spent 30 years managing Willow Hill Grain and later worked at Mont Eagle Mills, while also farming alongside his son Shannon, brother Dave, and nephew Adam.
Ken was a dedicated member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and took pride in his faith and community. He enjoyed checking crops, family vacations, and supporting the University of Illinois Illini. He was known for his kindness, strong work ethic, and commitment to doing every job well. Above all, he deeply loved his family and the life he built with them.
Ken is survived by his wife Mary; his children Shannon (Jennifer) Helregel and Laura (Lee) Rinella; and his grandchildren Allyson, Grant, Eleanor, and Benjamin. He is also survived by his siblings, extended family, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several beloved family members.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Sainte Marie, Illinois, with burial at Saint Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 16, from 5:00–7:00 PM and again Friday from 9:30–10:30 AM.
