Today, with deep sadness, we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Manuel P. Berriozábal and the enduring impact he made on the city of San Antonio. As a professor of mathematics and a dedicated faculty member at the University of Texas at San Antonio since 1976, he devoted his career to advancing education and expanding opportunity.
He worked tirelessly to mentor and inspire generations of Latino students in mathematics and science. In founding the Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP), he helped open pathways to STEM education for more than 50,000 students, creating opportunities that continue to shape futures across the region. Through his advocacy, he advanced equity and access for underserved communities, leaving a lasting imprint on education in San Antonio.
He was also a source of personal mentorship and friendship to many, including those who had the privilege of knowing him beyond his professional accomplishments. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as seen in the naming of Café College in his honor by my brother Julián, recognizing his extraordinary commitment to college readiness and student success. I am deeply saddened by his passing, and I extend heartfelt condolences to his wife María and their family during this time of loss. His legacy will continue to live on through the countless students and families he served.
In this moment of reflection, we honor not only his professional achievements, but the compassion, vision, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of education that defined his life’s work. The city of San Antonio and the academic community are stronger because of his contributions, and his example will continue to guide future educators and students for generations to come. May his memory be a blessing, and may his family find comfort in the wide-reaching impact of his life and lasting legacy.
