A father has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his five-week-old daughter, Darcy-Leigh Jefferson, following a case that shocked the community and revealed prolonged abuse. The infant died after suffering dozens of injuries, including severe trauma to her head, ribs, and legs, caused by repeated attacks.
Sean Jefferson, 35, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 22 years. His daughter died in hospital on 29 March 2022, two days after sustaining a catastrophic brain injury at the family home in Burntwood, Staffordshire, on Mother’s Day.
During proceedings at Stafford Crown Court, evidence showed that Darcy-Leigh had endured significant physical abuse over time. By the point of her fatal injury, she had suffered a total of 47 rib fractures, highlighting the extent of the violence inflicted upon her during her short life.
The child’s mother, Amy Clark, 34, was sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of causing or allowing her daughter’s death. The judge linked her conduct to substance abuse issues. Clark had initially faced charges of murder or manslaughter, but these were dropped later in the trial. She was also convicted of two counts of causing or allowing serious harm to a child.
Both parents denied multiple charges throughout the trial, which lasted nearly two months before concluding last month. In addition to murder, Jefferson was found guilty of two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
During sentencing, Mrs Justice Brunner described the case as a “terrible tragedy,” emphasizing the life Darcy-Leigh was denied. Police condemned the actions of both parents as an “appalling betrayal” of their responsibility to protect their child.
