A 23-year-old man from New York City has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that took place over the weekend at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Union, New Jersey. Authorities confirmed that Malek Shepherd was killed when a gunman opened fire inside the establishment on Route 22 late Saturday night.
According to officials, Shepherd was pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to the fatality, six other individuals were injured during the incident. Fortunately, their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, and they received medical treatment shortly afterward. The identities of those injured have not yet been made public.
Investigators are actively working to locate the suspect, and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office has announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the shooting does not appear to have been a random act, suggesting that the attacker may have had a specific target or motive.
Dashcam footage captured in the restaurant’s parking lot shows a masked individual holding a handgun and running out of the building moments after the shooting. Shortly afterward, several other people can be seen fleeing the scene, while a light-colored sedan quickly drives away, possibly connected to the suspect.
Union Township Mayor Patricia Guerra-Frazier addressed the tragedy in a public statement, expressing sorrow and concern for the community. She described the incident as a stark reminder of the ongoing need to improve public safety and prevent violence. She also called for unity, urging residents to support one another during this difficult time.
