An investigation is underway into a deadly officer-involved shooting in East Lansing that occurred after a reported stabbing Wednesday night at the intersection of Lake Lansing Road and Abbot Road, according to Michigan State Police.
Authorities say the incident began with a stabbing that left a man seriously injured. A law firm identified the victim of that initial attack as Douglas Mielock, a shareholder at Foster Swift’s Lansing office. The firm confirmed that Mielock underwent surgery and is currently recovering from his injuries.
Following the stabbing, East Lansing Police responded to the scene, where events escalated and resulted in a fatal officer-involved shooting. Police have not publicly released additional details about what led to the shooting itself, including the sequence of events or what prompted the use of deadly force.
The investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police, which is conducting an independent review. Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez said the agency’s Special Investigation Section responds to such incidents to ensure transparency and public trust.
According to Lt. Gonzalez, investigators gather physical evidence, interview witnesses and involved parties, and review available surveillance footage and body-worn camera recordings. Once the evidence is compiled, a full report is submitted to either the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office or the Michigan Attorney General’s Office for further review.
Officials say the process can take anywhere from a week to as long as a year, depending on the complexity of the case. Authorities emphasized the importance of thoroughness in determining exactly what happened.
East Lansing Police have confirmed the shooting is being treated as a critical incident, and further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
