A driver was wounded in a shooting on the 105 Freeway in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, prompting an extended closure of eastbound lanes and causing major traffic delays, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Officers responded at approximately 1:45 p.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive driver slumped over the steering wheel of a black Toyota Camry traveling in the carpool lane on the eastbound side of the freeway, west of Vermont Avenue. When authorities arrived, they discovered the driver inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officials have not released updates on the driver’s current status.
Investigators noted that the right rear window of the Camry was shattered, indicating the point of impact. At this time, no weapons have been recovered, and authorities have not determined what led to the shooting or whether the victim was specifically targeted.
The California Highway Patrol shut down all eastbound lanes of the 105 Freeway in the affected area while investigators processed the scene. The closure caused significant traffic congestion across surrounding routes as commuters were diverted.
Authorities are actively searching for a suspect and any associated vehicle. No description of a suspect has been released so far.
CHP says the investigation remains ongoing, and it is still unclear when the freeway will fully reopen to traffic.
