Shah, a decorated United States Army officer and devoted educator, whose life was tragically taken on April 6, 2026, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Lt. Col. Shah’s loss is felt not only by his family—his beloved wife and son—but also by a grateful nation, the military community, and the countless students whose lives he touched through his service and mentorship.
Brandon Shah enlisted in the United States Army in 2003 following his graduation from the University of Georgia. Throughout his career, he distinguished himself as a courageous leader, piloting AH-64 Apache attack helicopters in Iraq and Afghanistan, and earning numerous honors including the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and commendation medals for his exemplary leadership in combat. His dedication to service extended beyond the battlefield, as he returned to Old Dominion University in 2022 to serve as Professor of Military Science and lead the Army ROTC Monarch Battalion, preparing future officers with both discipline and integrity.
On that tragic morning in March, Lt. Col. Shah confronted an armed attacker who entered his classroom. In an act of extraordinary bravery and selflessness, he gave his life to protect his students, embodying the highest ideals of military service and personal courage. Thanks to his actions, lives were spared, and his heroism will forever be remembered by those he safeguarded.
